The Anglo-Egyptian Bank

The then new Anglo-Egyptian Bank building in Tantah, erected in 1906 on a triangular site surrounded by streets (currently the corner of Ahmed Maher St & Qantara St). The building is designed by architect Robert Williams, in red bricks generally. The balconies, oriel and heads of windows are in Doulting stone; the two columns at the entrance supporting a large balcony are of Dove-colored Pentelikon marble worked and carved at the Marmor Company's quarries in Greece. Contrary to the usual custom in Egypt at the time, no part of the exterior will be plastered, thus allowing the material used in construction as well as the constructive lines to be seen, which should form the chief ornament of the building. There are three floors :— Basement, containing archive, storage and servants’ rooms; Ground Floor, wholly devoted to the business of the Bank, and First Floor, constructed as a dwelling house with rooms for washing etc. on the flat above.

مبنى بنك الأنجلو المصري بطنطا الذي تم إنشاؤه عام ١٩٠٦ فيما يعرف حاليا بناصية شارعي أحمد ماهر والقنطرة. صممه المعماري روبرت ويليامز، وكان الشكل الخارجي بالطوب الأحمر عموما، والشرفات والمشربية ورؤوس النوافذ من حجر دولتينج، أما العمودان الموجودان عند المدخل واللذان يدعمان شرفة كبيرة فهما من رخام بنتليكون ذو اللون الرمادي المشغول والمنحوت في محاجر شركة مارمور باليونان. وخلافا للعادة السائدة في مصر في ذلك الوقت، فإنه لن يتم تشطيب أي جزء من الخارج، مما يسمح برؤية المواد المستخدمة في البناء وكذلك الخطوط الإنشائية، والتي يجب أن تشكل الزخرفة الرئيسية للمبنى.

Widow Mourning

Widow Mourning, Kafr El Zayat, Gharbia, 1878. Illustration by Leopold Carl Müller, from Pictureseque Egypt, by George Moritz Ebers (1837-1898). This illustration appears to depict a woman clad in black and wearing a shawl, amidst the ruins of some ancient city, weeping, presumably for her lost husband. It is not clear whether she is in a graveyard or by a some ancient tomb.

أرملة في حالة حداد، كفر الزيات ، الغربية، ١٨٧٨. رسم توضيحي من أعمال ليوبولد كارل مولر، من كتاب Pictureseque Egypt لجورج موريتز إبيرس (١٨٣٧-١٨٩٨). يبدو أن هذا الرسم التوضيحي يصور امرأة ترتدي ملابس سوداء وشالاً، وسط أنقاض بعض المدن القديمة، وهي تبكي على الأرجح على زوجها المفقود. ليس من الواضح ما إذا كانت في مقبرة أو بالقرب من مقبرة قديمة.
